Process

17 June 2018

“Process plays a big part in my painting practice. Each new painting demands a different approach in order to achieve the desired effects.”

I often find myself having to think about ways of working that I haven't used before, which makes creating all the more interesting. In quite a few of the paintings I have been working on, the image begins by building up a background over which other forms are placed, making two or more 'layers' within the final painting. More often than not these 'grounds' require patient repetition of drawn shapes and textures. There is often a suggestion of movement that contrasts with the static forms that are overlaid.

I experimented with using a large silkscreen to achieve a flat colour area on part of a recent work in progress.
